STPN Grand Rounds

On the second Thursday of every month the South Thames Paediatric Network will be hosting Grand Rounds. There will be a different topic each month, presented by teams from across the region. We will cover individual case presentations or themes in care delivery affecting us all.

The topics for each session are outlined below:

13:00 – 14:00

Dr Ella Aidoo, Consultant in paediatric palliative medicine, and Megan Watkins, Clinical Nurse Specialist in paediatric palliative care, present an overview of paediatric palliative care and when and how to refer patients to the service. They will also share their experiences of caring for children with T13 and T18 and how to better support these families.

Children with long-term ventilation needs often present with complex medical backgrounds that impact on their feeding and swallowing. Whilst these complications present frequently in the clinical setting, little research has previously been completed in this area. In this grand round presentation, results of a scoping review examining the evidence base for feeding and swallowing outcomes in children with long-term ventilation needs will be presented. Secondly, the preliminary results of a patient and public involvement (PPI) project exploring the views of parents and carers of children with long-term ventilation and feeding/swallowing difficulties will be discussed. The implications of this research on clinical practice within multidisciplinary long-term ventilation teams and future directions for research will also be presented.
