The STPN Emergency Airway Guidance is now available to support the safe and effective management of paediatric airways across all STPN acute sites.
Designed for the whole multidisciplinary team, who manage children in acute settings. The guidance provides a structured approach to recognising, planning for, and managing difficult paediatric airways.
While unanticipated airway emergencies in children are uncommon, they carry significant risk. Developed in response to national safety data, this guidance promotes a consistent network-wide approach – supporting early identification of high-risk patients, timely ENT involvement, standardised equipment, and strengthened training.
Key Benefits:
– Standardised approach to difficult paediatric airway management
– Clear criteria for recognising red flags and high-risk patients
– Emphasis on oxygenation and early planning
– Improved team communication, defined leadership roles, and use of cognitive aids
– Practical tools including checklists, algorithms, and equipment guidance
– Recommendations for training and simulation to build workforce confidence
An accompanying infographic has also been developed to support quick reference in clinical settings.
