STPN working with SETPEG and SIPEG to enhance specialised care pathways
The STPN has made significant progress in improving access to specialised epilepsy care for children, particularly regarding tertiary referrals and epilepsy surgery. A key achievement is the development of the STPN Guideline for Referral for Tertiary and Epilepsy Surgery, which includes a single point of access. This streamlined process aims to reduce inequalities and increase the number of eligible children being referred for surgery.
A recent analysis of referrals to the Children’s Epilepsy Surgery Service (CESS), using postcode mapping and deprivation indices referenced to each ICB, showed no significant differences. This suggests that local teams are aware of the service and the referral pathway.
Access to the Ketogenic Diet remains challenging due to limited service provision, restricting availability to some children who could benefit most. To improve local access and reduce travel burden, outreach clinics have been established. These clinics train local clinicians and provide high-quality care closer to home, ensuring families can access specialist epilepsy treatment within their communities.
